Jörg Schöpfel

I´m a Berliner since 1988. I was born in a small village near Frankfurt/Main. Berlin’s vibrant cultural live was calling in my early 20s. I wanted to live on the traces of David Bowie and Nick Cave.  Shortly after I arrived, the wall disappeared and the city changed into an even more interesting place.

I have a master's degree in Geography and did more than 50 jobs like journalism, doing field research, managing a Santa agency, doing barkeeper schooling, leading father-kid camps, and running a top rated hostel for many years. Now I am tourguide and I love it. I meet interesting people every day and I learn from them as well as I try to give them new inspirations.

I am mostly interested in German history from the last 200 years. When Germany became an empire, the people were already in the midst of the transformation to modernity. Nationalism conquered many parts of the world and industrialisation changed living circumstances within a few years. People were confused and fascinated at the same time - a bit like today.

If you go on a tour with me, you can expect an inspiring ride through German history with a lot of small personal side stories.

To inform about the Nazi period and Facism is a personal mission for me. Both of my grandfathers died in WWII (so I never met them); all my family was very personally affected by the war. The more I learn about the dark side - the more I know how much we can learn from history and how this knowledge can help us to shape the future. I would love to give you some insights into how these 12 terrible years of Nazi-dictatorship happened.

I was born 5 years and 1 day after the wall was built. My father has sent some prayers as he did not want a "wall baby" ;-) The Cold War is still present in my memories - I would love to share some of my personal insights with you.

And I can serve as an eyewitness for how this city changed after the fall of the Wall. Do you know about the Love Parade when Techno started? Did you know that in Berlin we still have a lot of things twice? Do you want to hear the story of my aunt Evi who lived from 1908 till 2006 in the same place but in so many different systems? Do you know how difficult it is to unite a country after several years of nearly no exchange?

I love weird stories. Do you know about the changing meaning of the expression "made in Germany"? Do you know how the potato came to Prussia? Do you know the relation between food quality and the success of the Prussian Army? Have you ever heard of Frauleinwunder? Do you know how a rock song might have a part in taking down the Wall?

I do public and private walking tours in Berlin from 2-6 hours. I can also do car tours (I have the driving permission for mini-vans up to 8 people) and bike tours.

Additionally I do tours to the surrounding areas of Brandenburg to places like Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Ravensbruck Women´s Concentration Camp, Seelow Battlefield, Peenemünde Rocket Base, GDR Cold War Command Bunkers, Lost Places where Tom Cruise was acting, beautiful lakes and castles with decent food on selected stops. Some of the tours can be done by train & bike (or hike) and some require a car.

Hope to see you soon in Berlin - Auf Wiedersehen!
