Marriette Rough
Marriette Rough
My name is Marriette, and I’m a Brit living in Berlin. Ask any non-German how they ended up here, and you’ll usually hear the same story: “I came on holiday and never left.” That’s exactly how it happened for me. Fresh out of Manchester University with a BA in Sociology, I was ready to escape the drizzle of the motherland and dive into something new. What started as a short fling with Berlin quickly became a full-blown love affair, and all these years later, I’m still here. I’ve mastered the language, gained German citizenship, and built a life I never imagined.
I’ve been a full-time tour guide since 2008, and I still wake up excited to head to work, a sure sign I’ve found my calling. I spent a decade leading Bike and Segway Tours with Fat Tire Bike Tours before transitioning to freelance guiding, collaborating with Original Berlin Walks, Humboldt University, Berlin Locals, and Fork & Walk, as well as offering a wide range of private tours.
In addition, I have researched and written engaging historical & travel content for Sandemans New Europe, Fat Tire Bike Tours, and Essence of Berlin. For several years, I also worked as a Tour Manager for Explorica, leading young North American school groups on ten trips across Europe. More recently, I have focused on providing private tours through Tours By Locals and my own company, Reveal Berlin.
Berlin is unlike any other city: layered with history, bursting with contradictions, raw and resilient, constantly reinventing itself. It’s not always pretty, but it’s always real. And it never, ever gets boring. Berlin is a living, breathing creature with a personality all its own. It’s reeled me in for good, and I’d love to show you exactly why. Looking forward to meeting you!
